Muddy Run Steam Sawmill

Muddy Run Steam Sawmill

This sawmill was located near the mouth of Muddy Run, about two miles north of town along the river. This map from 1858 shows the area. The site would later be the location of Riverside Park. It was owned by a partnership of Nagle, Eschbach and Churchill. Miltonian newspaper articles describing some of its history are below.

Miltonian, September 27, 1863: Billmeyer saw mill owned by Nagle and Eschbach destroyed by fire.

Miltonian, April 7, 1871: The Muddy Run Steam Saw Mill is in operation once more, after lying idle for a year. Messrs. Nagle and Eschbach are now ready to receive orders for bill lumber and will no doubt push the business energetically.

Miltonian, April 17, 1874: The saw mill of Nagle, Eschbach & Churchill, located at the mouth of Muddy Run, two miles above town was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night, together with a two story frame dwelling, frame barn and a large amount of lumber. The loss is estimated at $30,000.
