    • The property was destroyed by the great Milton fire on May 14, 1880. It is believed the family lost everything in the fire. Seth then took a position managing the farm of William A. Heinen, and the family moved to a tenant house at the rear of the Heinen property, where they lived until moving to the house at 220 Center Street in 1900.

    • He managed the dairy farm of William A. Heinen and lived on the premises from 1880 to 1900. The Heinen farmhouse stands today, at the corner of Golf Course Rd. (N. Turbot Ave.) and Red Top Rd. The Hill family lived in a house, which has since been torn down, at the back of the property.

    • In 1804, John Christ sold two acres of land to John Stahl, Jr., Michael Kuhns, and John Dieffenbacher, trustees of the Paradise congregation, for church and school purposes, and also to be used as a burial ground. This is the ground where the sexton house and the old part of the cemetery are now.

      In 1809, a log building was erected to serve as a church and school. The church became know as "Christ Church" and the school as "Eschbach's School".

      In 1824, the present sexton house was built as a "Union Church" by the Paradise Lutheran congregation and the Paradise Reformed congregation.

      In 1859, the Reformed congregation built the present church on ground purchased from Conrad Menges, Jr. The Lutherans remained in "Christ Church" until about 1900, when the building was sold at auction to Seth Hill. In 1902, he sold it to the Reformed Church, and it became the sexton house.

    Biography


    • BIOGRAPHY:
      SETH C. HILL, farmer, was born in Chillisquaque township, Northumberland county, Pennsylvania, November 9, 1830, son of Elijah and Rebecca (Wenrich) Hill. His father was a native of Berks county, and came with his parents to Chillisquaque township; here he was reared and began life as a day laborer, but afterwards engaged in farming in Limestone township, Montour county, where he remained ten years, and then moved to Turbut township, where he remained until his death in March, 1887. He was an active Republican in politics, and for thirty-five years a member of the Lutheran church of Milton. serving as deacon of the same many years. His wife still survives him. They reared five children, two of whom are living: Seth C. and Alfred. The subject of this sketch received his educa­tion at the public schools, and has principally followed the occupation of a farmer. For six years he engaged in the lumber business in Clinton county, Pennsylvania. and was engaged in the grocery business in Milton several years, after which he embarked in the dairy business, and in 1880 accepted his present position as manager of the farm and dairy of William Heinen. In 1861 he married Rachel, daughter of Abraham Angeny, a native of Bucks county and a settler of Turbut township. By this union they have six children: Clara; Kate; Alice; Bessie; William; and Harry. Mr. Hill is an elder in the Lutheran church of Milton. Politically he is a Republican.
