This picture was taken facing south. The commissary to distribute relief supplies is in the front, with the Knauff Planing Mill behind it. Center Street runs across, ramping up to the railroad tracks at the left.
John Knauff was a planing mill operator during the 1870s. He lived along the east side of Locust Alley (now Filbert Street) at the time of the fire. His home and business were spared when the wind swept the fire to the southwest, away from his properties. You can see the path of the fire here.
